How to Become a Foster Carer in Warwickshire
Becoming a foster carer in Warwickshire is a thorough and rewarding process. It starts with an initial request and a telephone interview with our recruitment team. If successful, a social worker will then arrange a visit and conduct a preliminary assessment. After a positive recommendation from the preliminary assessment, you will be will required to attend a two-day “Skills to Foster” training / assessment days that covers responsibilities as foster carers and working with Acorn Fostering Services. After a positive recommendation from this, you will be invited to make an application, once your application is accepted, a fully comprehensive assessment called a Form F assessment will be started, which includes statutory checks such as DBS, previous local authorities, and OFSTED. The complete approval process typically takes 4-6 months and requires attending an independent fostering panel with your assessing social worker.
Throughout the process, applicants will be guided to compile a written material portfolio showcasing their relevant experience and skills. If approved, foster carers will be subject to the terms and conditions in Acorn Fostering Services’ Service Agreement, and their approval will be reviewed annually.
What Foster Training Is Available?
Acorn Fostering Services provides a comprehensive training program for pre-approval and post-approval foster carers. Prospective foster carers must attend a mandatory two-day training called Skills to Foster, facilitated by Acorn Fostering Services’ Senior Recruitment Officer and current foster carers. This training aims to provide realistic insight into fostering and help prospective foster carers determine if fostering is right for them and their family. Post-approval training includes a mix of e-learning, face-to-face, and virtual training, tailored to individual foster carers’ needs identified in their Personal Development Plan (PDP). There are mandatory training events for foster carers, and they receive a calendar of the training events at the start of the year, allowing them to plan around their fostering tasks and commitments. Regular support groups, including virtual and face-to-face meetings, are also available to Acorn’s foster carers, along with a WhatsApp support group and a buddy system to provide additional support and advice.
