How to Become a Foster Carer in Derbyshire
Becoming a foster carer in Derbyshire is a rewarding and life-changing experience. To start the process, contact our recruitment team, who will conduct a telephone interview with you. If this is successful, a social worker will arrange a visit and carry out a preliminary assessment. If you are recommended for the next stage, you will attend a two day mandatory training and assessment called Skills to Foster, after a positive recommendation you will be invited to make an application and once accepted a comprehensive assessment process known as the Form F Assessment, which involves a range of statutory checks will be started. Once you have completed the assessment process and been approved by our independent fostering panel, you will become a foster carer with Acorn Fostering Services, subject to the terms and conditions in our Service Agreement. The approval process generally takes 4-6 months, and your approval will be reviewed annually.
What Foster Training Is Available?
Before submitting an application, prospective foster carers are required to attend a two-day training called “Skills to Foster,” facilitated by the Senior Recruitment Officer and current foster carers. This training is mandatory and designed to provide an understanding of the realities of fostering. After approval, foster carers attend regular support groups organised by their Supervising Social Workers, which may be virtual or face-to-face. Acorn also provides a range of post-approval training, including e-learning, face-to-face, and virtual training, to fulfill individual foster carers’ training needs, as outlined in their Personal Development Plans. There are also mandatory training events that foster carers receive a calendar for at the beginning of each year. Acorn Fostering Services emphasises continuous support and training to help foster carers provide the best care possible to the children in their care.
